Roof Cladding Installation at East Boldre Village Hall

Project Outline

East Boldre War Memorial Village Hall holds a place in local history that few buildings can match. It is the last surviving First World War airfield building in the New Forest, and the community around it has invested considerable effort in seeing it restored to its full potential. The wider refurbishment programme, valued at £450,000 and funded through grants, donations, and ongoing fundraising, aimed to preserve the hall's heritage while transforming it into a modern facility capable of hosting a much wider range of community events and activities.

Crocker Cladding’s involvement came through Westmade Ltd, who appointed us to carry out the roof cladding package as part of this significant refurbishment. The brief was to deliver a durable, low-maintenance roofing solution that would protect the building for the long term while complementing its character. From the outset, it was clear that this project carried real meaning for the community it serves, and that made it one we were particularly glad to be part of.

What We Did

The scope of works centred on the full installation of a new tile-effect built-up roof cladding system across the building. The tile-effect profile was selected to sit sympathetically with the character of the hall, providing the visual warmth of a traditional roof finish while delivering the performance and longevity that a modern cladding system offers. Built-up systems of this type use multiple layers working together to provide weatherproofing, thermal performance, and structural integrity in a single cohesive installation.

Alongside the main roof, we supplied and installed all perimeter aluminium flashings to create a clean, fully weatherproof finish at every edge and junction. Flashings are often where roof installations are let down, so getting the detailing right was a priority throughout. We also installed new rainwater goods including gutters and downpipes, ensuring the completed roof has a properly integrated drainage system to manage water efficiently away from the building.

Detailed finishing works were carried out throughout to ensure the overall result met the standard the project demanded. Every element was installed with care, with full attention paid to the junctions between the new roof cladding and the separately installed timber cladding on the building's gable ends, so the completed envelope reads as a coherent, considered finish rather than a series of independent trades working in isolation.

The Result

The completed roof delivers meaningful improvements on multiple fronts. Visually, the tile-effect profile gives the hall a clean, renewed appearance that respects the building's character without looking out of place in its New Forest setting. The combination of new roof cladding, properly detailed flashings, and new rainwater goods means the building is now properly protected against the elements for years to come, with minimal maintenance required to keep it performing.

The project was completed on programme and to the required standard, contributing to the wider refurbishment effort and helping get the hall back on track for reopening. It was a project with clear community significance, and we are pleased to have played our part in delivering it well.
